The 2003 Walk-n-Roll event is sure to be the best yet. With proceeds going to our Civitan International Research Center (www.circ.uab.edu/), this is a FUN-raiser with a tan! Located on the famous white sandy beaches of the Gulf of Mexico, the Holiday Inn-Madeira Beach will be the place to be for the weekend of April 4-7. Visit the Holiday Inn website  www.madeirabeachresort.com for a look at the gulf view—be sure to picture yourself lounging in the sun and playing in the surf!

In addition to the Walk-n-Roll 5K event on the beach, the weekend may include a tropical luau, a trip to a local theme park, a day of fun on the beach, as well as a Welcome Dinner-Dance and Farewell Evening at the St. Petersburg Civitan Beach Club.

Busch Gardens is the areas biggest theme park with some of Florida’s best (and fastest) roller coasters. It also has one of the state’s best zoos. It’s known as "The Dark Continent," and a visit to this zoo is like an adventure to the plains of Africa—it’s specially designed to look like some of those spots in Africa where people go to get glimpses of wild animals.

Visit www.buschgardens.com/buschgardens/fla/index.html to check it all out.

Also nearby is the 25-acre Adventure Island Waterpark, which offers tons of water fun. Daredevils will be challenged by high-speed rides such as The Water Moccasin, a 6-story-high twisting, extra wide water slide, and Tampa Typhoon, a 76-foot near free-fall drop. To catch your breath between those adrenaline-pumping experiences, you can visit Splash Attack, a 12-level tree house with more than 50 slides, water jets and rope climbs. Or, you can hangout at Paradise Lagoon, a giant swimming pool with waterfalls, jumping platforms, cannonball slides, and translucent water tubes.

Walk-n-Roll Needs You!

…It’s Too Much Fun!

By Jason Butland, International Director

What happens when 17 teenagers hop on a bus, catch a plane, or even a train all heading to one destination - Orlando, Florida. This could mean only one thing, the 5th annual Walk-n-Roll. On April 5th everyone met at the Comfort Suites in sunny Orlando.

Our first stop upon arrival? Wendy’s. We all showed up at once. What a riot! Next we had a night of ice skating at the RVD Sports Complex. We skated around, danced, and high-fived. After an exciting night on the ice, we head back to meet our host families.

On Saturday morning, this adventuresome group met to embark on our 5K marathon through the streets of Orlando. After our strenuous workout it was time to cool off. Luckily, Orlando’s Wet ‘n Wild water park was at the finish line. We spent the afternoon cooling off and chilling out under the hot Florida sun. One of our favorite rides was The Storm, the fastest and most exciting way to get wet.

From there we went to home of our host event coordinator, Mr. Dietz, where we stuffed our faces full of pizza, played pool and danced all night.

Sunday morning we hopped on a bus to Universal Studios’ Islands of Adventure. Once at the port of entry, there was not keeping us from those fast and furious rides. Our favorites? There is not doubt: Incredible Hulk, Dr. Dooms Fearfall, and the Dueling Dragons.

Once we were sufficiently whirled and twirled, we were ready for our Farewell Dinner at Johnny Rivers’ Smokehouse, yummy! What better way to close out a weekend than with some good old-fashioned American bar-b-que. While there we ate, played, reminisced, and made new friends. Most important, we raised over $14,000 with proceeds benefiting our Civitan International Research Center.

This year it is very important for each district to rally in support of this event. With over 400 clubs and 14,000 members, surely there are enough people interested in supporting our Civitan International Research Center while enjoying some fun in the sun.

Without everyone’s support, this might be Walk-n-Roll’s sixth an final year. Remember, Walk-n-Roll does more than take you to a place where the breezes are warm and the sand it white; it takes you to a place where every step you take improves the life of another human being. Let’s go the distance and show our support of people with developmental disabilities in the true spirit of Junior Civitan.

Walk-n-Roll 2001

When Junior Civitans from all across Northern America gather in the sunny state of Florida, it had to be for the fourth annual Walk-N-Roll. The fun-filled weekend began on Friday night with the opening banquet at the world renowned Columbia Restaurant. During the banquet introductions and presentations were made, achievements in fund-raising were awarded and host volunteers recognized. The night concluded with a walk down the main strip and then a good night’s sleep at our host families.

Under the bright Florida sun wearing lots of sunscreen, Saturday began early with the participants walking or running along Bayshore Boulevard. Following the path of the longest sidewalk in the world, the 5K passed quickly with the beautiful bay on one side and glamorous houses on the other. Chestnut Park was our next destination where several of the local Civitan clubs had prepared lunch and a day of fun in the sun. The day was spent catching a few rays, riding wave runners and playing a roaring game of kickball. The evening was drawn to an end with dinner at the Spaghetti Warehouse and then on to an indoor arena football game.

On Sunday, the St. Petersburg Civitan Club welcomed us into their beach club for another wonderful day. A DJ filled the afternoon with music and the band “Hematite” gave us their version of "The Star Spangled Banner" and other songs. A sea turtle and a "modern" sandcastle (made of clear plastic cups with sand on top) were the winners of the annual sandcastle building competition that afternoon.

We all made the long trips back home on Monday with the great memories of our weekend in Florida. Sponsored by the Sunshine District, the 2001 Walk-n-Roll raised over $16,000 for the Civitan International Research Center. Special thanks go out to all the many wonderful volunteers, sponsoring clubs, our host families, the host committee and especially to Host Event Coordinator Doug Kirk for making our weekend extra special and sponsoring the Walk-n-Roll. Because of you, we were THINKING DIFFERENT, BEING DIFFERENT, AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE.
